Compiled and Created by Sue Davies, Resource Connection For Kids, Resource Library Silly Science Stuff: Recipes Here's some things you and your child can mix up together for summer fun. Contributed by Resource Connection for Kids, Sue Davies GAK (Takes a little work, but it's worth it!) Warning: May stick to carpet or clothing - if so cover the area with a cloth soaked in vinegar to de-gel it then wash with soap & water. This concoction is mixed up in two separate parts and then added together Solution 1 • 1 cup water • 1 cup white glue (Elmers) • 7 - 10 Food coloring Solution 2 • 1 1/3 cup warm water • 4 tsp borax laundry soap How to Mix It • Mix all the ingredients of solution 1 in a medium bowl. • In another bowl, mix the ingredients of solution 2 together until the borax is completely dissolved. • Slowly pour solution 1 into solution 2 (DO NOT MIX!) • Roll solution 1 around solution 2 4-5 times. • Lift solution 1 out of solution 2 and knead 2-3 minutes (the excess water will fall off). • Store Goop in an airtight container or plastic bag.
Goop 2 tab white glue 1 tab liquid starch food coloring Mix the glue and the food coloring. Pour the starch over the top. Swish so the all the glue is covered. Let set 5 minutes. Squeeze off extra starch. Knead until mixed.
Finger Licking Finger Paint Materials: • Thick corn syrup • Food coloring (check out the new florescent colors available) • Finger painting paper. Directions: • Put a good size blob of syrup on the paper. • Add a drop or two of food coloring onto the syrup • Let them dig in • The painting will need to dry a day or so. Once dry you can cut out their designs in the shape of their favorite animal like a fish or butterfly www.kinderart.com
Super Sidewalk Paint Materials: • 1/4 cup cornstarch • 1/4 cup cold water • 6-8 drops food coloring Directions: • Mix the cornstarch and water together in a small bowl. • Add the food coloring and stir, • Repeat the process to make several different colors This can be easily washed away with water. It is great for painting where large areas need to be covered, like a rainbow. You can use to make hopscotch grids or roads for cars. Source unknown
Sparkle Bottle Materials: • Small clear plastic soda or water bottle with a cap (label removed) • Light corn syrup • Assorted shapes of metallic confetti (found in card or craft stores) • Cold water Directions: • Fill the bottle 3/4 full with the corn syrup. • Add a small handful of the metallic confetti. • Fill the bottle the rest of the way with water. • Seal the cap tightly and shake. Variations • Add some food coloring to the water. Blue makes a great wave bottle. • Use a empty bottle t fill about hale way with sand and some small shells for a souvenir of a day at the beach. • Let your child experiment with different things to add to the bottles to create their own "discover bottle".
Peanut Butter Playdough 1 cup peanut butter 1 cup non-fat dry milk powder 1 1/2 tablespoon honey Let your child measure the ingredients and knead the dough. Once it is mixed, it can be played with just like regular playdough. It's also safe to eat the things they make. Store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
Kool-Aid Playdough 1 cup flour 1 tab vegetable oil 1 pkg unsweetened Kool-Aid 1/4 cup salt 2 tab cream of tartar 1 cup water Mix flour, slat, cream of tartar, and kool-aid in a medium pan. Add the water and the oil. ADULTS - then stir over a medium heat 3-5 minutes until mixture forms a ball in the pot. Remove and let cool until you can handle it. Knead until smooth. Store in a plastic bag in the refrigerator
Homemade Bubbles 3 1/2 cups Joy or Dawn dishwashing detergent 1 1/4 cup Karo light corn syrup Blend ingredients in a sealable container. To use mix 1 part concentrate to 10 parts water. Store in sealable container.
